Star Trek: The Next Generation

I remember watching Star Trek:TNG when it first aired and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I thought I would try and rediscover it by watching the complete series from the start.

I may be remembering it through rose-coloured glasses but so far I have been disappointed.  Although I have only just finished watching season 1 and have only just started on season 2, it is definitely not as good as I remember it.

Season 1, in particular, makes me cringe watching the flimsy plots and atrocious acting.  A lot of the time the story is built up with a lot of dramatic tension.  It then either fizzles out with a tame ending or Ensign Wesley Crusher comes up with a brilliant solution.  The telepathic conversation between Riker and Deanna Troi in the first episode is hilarious, I can see why that was abandoned from later episodes.

The beginning of season 2 does seem to be marginally better.  I do remember some later episodes with pleasure, particularly the stories involving Worf’s discovery of his back history, although I think that comes much later in the series.

I am also looking forward to the stories involving Data’s journey in learning about humanity.  These remind me of Isaac Asimov’s ‘The Bicentennial Man’, in which a robot tries to become a human. (Incidentally, that was a superb story, full of pathos and emotion, which was completely ruined for me by Robin Williams movie version.)

These are some of the stories that stand out in my mind:

  • Data tries to raise a child
  • Picard spend a year on a planet to experience their culture
  • Starfleet tries to disassemble Data
  • The away team are discovered on a planet by the indigenous population who treat them as Gods (I think there was an episode like this in Voyager)
  • Picard resists a witch-hunt in Starfleet
  • Worf tries to clear his father’s name
  • Worf’s son turns up on the Enterprise
  • I am looking forward to my voyages and to exploring strange new worlds and seeing new life and civilisations.
